Why isn't Jonathan getting the whole concept of war?

I noticed that Jonathan is only looking at the fun side of the war.He is a kid and all kids do.But when his father tries to tell him hes too young, He ignores him and doesn't listen.Jonathan's dad is afraid he is going to get hurt or maybe even killed.Jonathan needs to think about the bad side of the war not just the good side.
